Assessing the association between hypoxia during craniofacial development and oral clefts

Abstract Objectives To evaluate the association between hypoxia during embryo development and oral clefts in an animal model, and to evaluate the association between polymorphisms in the HIF-1A gene with oral clefts in human families. Material and Methods The study with the animal model used zebrafish embryos at 8 hours post-fertilization submitted to 30% and 50% hypoxia for 24 hours. At 5 days post-fertilization, the larvae were fixed. The cartilage structures were stained to evaluate craniofacial phenotypes. The family-based association study included 148 Brazilian nuclear families with oral clefts. The association between the genetic polymorphisms rs2301113 and rs2057482 in HIF-1A with oral clefts was tested. We used real time PCR genotyping approach. ANOVA with Tukey's post-test was used to compare means. The transmission/disequilibrium test was used to analyze the distortion of the inheritance of alleles from parents to their affected offspring. Results For the hypoxic animal model, the anterior portion of the ethmoid plate presented a gap in the anterior edge, forming a cleft. The hypoxia level was associated with the severity of the phenotype (p<0.0001). For the families, there was no under-transmitted allele among the affected progeny (p>0.05). Conclusion Hypoxia is involved in the oral cleft etiology, however, polymorphisms in HIF-1A are not associated with oral clefts in humans.

Auditoria de enfermagem em Centro Cirúrgico / Audit of nursing in the operating room

A auditoria de enfermagem no Centro Cirúrgico é utilizada pelas instituições de saúde nos dias atuais com a finalidade de avaliar a assistência e otimizar os custos decorrentes da prestação dos serviços. Os registros de enfermagem são a principal ferramenta de mensuração da qualidade e método para cobrança, mas, muitas vezes, são banalizados pela própria equipe de enfermagem. O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar as experiências vivenciadas pelas autoras durante a atuação profissional em Centro Cirúrgico. Trata-se de um relato de experiência com abordagem descritiva. O conhecimento sobre a auditoria de enfermagem no Centro Cirúrgico e a compreensão dos aspectos e mecanismos de atuação do profissional de enfermagem são imperativos para uma prestação de assistência de enfermagem de qualidade.

The audit of nursing in the surgical center is used by healthcare facilities with the purpose of evaluating assistance and improving costs arising from the provision of the services. Nursing records are the primary tool of quality measurement and billing method. The objective of the study was to report the experiments experienced by the authors during professional performance in the surgical center. It is an experience report with descriptive approach. Results showed that nursing execute most of the procedures in surgical center and ends up prioritizing assistance to the detriment to notes in patient’s medical reports. The register itself is trivialized by nursing staff. The knowledge about the nursing audit in surgical center and the comprehension of the aspects and mechanisms of the role of the nursing professional is imperative for an nursing assistance provision of quality.
